Over. Whelmed.

  • Too many projects that should be done NOW (insulation, shore up kitchen floor that is eternally sinking, scrape/prime/paint exterior window trim....there is so much more but I'm depressing myself)
  • No funds
  • Worried about job
  • COLD already and it's only November

Sigh. I'd better stop before I wallow down any further.

What do you do when you feel like this? I am waaaay open to suggestions. :]

I am in the same boat... We're just muddling through, but I suppose that's not the happy, uplifting advice you were looking for :) It does get better, though. Just remember how far you've come, and maybe break down your to-do list into small, managable bits. And, if all else fails, take a break! Good luck...

Honestly? I remind myself that, at some point, it's going to be spring again, and spring is always good.

(Ironically, this is the same way I'm hoping to get through potty-training my daughter in a couple years. I know that no one gets to high school without being potty-trained, so I just need to keep an eye on the long-run.)

Have something warm to drink & look at a Christmas magazine - that is what makes me feel better. Or vacuuming, that helps too.

Check up on your favorite blogs for inspiration! That's what I'm doing now : ) I can relate to the 'overwhelmed' feeling as we’re just now wrapping up a two-year plus remodel. Can you cut down your ‘to do’ list any? Maybe focus on the things that need to get done before winter rolls around? To preserve your sanity and well-being, I’d try and give your self a break and just focus on the absolute necessary stuff. The other things can wait and perhaps some relief will come with that. Everything you’ve done is so great and I’m sure your beautiful old house would just love to give you a big warm hug for brushing her off and making her shine again. : )

We're in the same boat too...I've found that cleaning through crap and making a list of "fiscally neutral" projects (can't remember on which blog I saw this, but basically projects for which you have the stuff, just haven't done it yet)and picking one to do gives me a glimmer of hope.

We also made a star chart---think first grade here :-) four and a half years ago when we started this mess, and just listed all the things we wanted to do. It's posted on the hall wall. When things are done we put on a gold star. I know it sounds corny, but the list is single line, three pages long, and we have over 3/4 of the projects starred!! And I'm not above adding things to the list with a star after we've done them. Nor am I above listing phases of a project for individual stars. Our guests love it and they don't mind the half-done bathroom as much cause they know we're working on it. Slowly.

If nothing else, listing what you've already done should encourage you!

I remind myself that we are ALL in the same boat! Trust me, you are not alone in these worries/frustrations. That's the beauty of the house blog community though--we all have either been there before, are there now, or will be there at some point in the future.
Keep your chin up, attack one thing at a time, and remember how far you've come already! You can do it, and it will get done--eventually. Remember, the journey's supposed to be the fun part. ;)

I know this is late, but when I am overwhelmed, I look at other people's houseblogs and feel better knowing that my problems are not as bad as theirs!!!!!!!
